Mabalacat is one of the oldest municipalities in the Province of Pampanga. The name "Mabalacat" was derived from the abundant Balacat trees (Ziziphus talanai) that once grew throughout the area. Early settlers named the community after these trees, which became one of the defining features of the locality.
During the Spanish colonial period, Mabalacat developed into an agricultural community where farming became the primary livelihood of its residents. The fertile lands supported the cultivation of rice, sugarcane, and other crops that contributed to the municipality's economic growth.
Throughout the American period and World War II, Mabalacat played an important role because of its strategic location. The establishment of Clark Air Base significantly influenced the municipality's development by creating employment opportunities and encouraging commercial and infrastructure growth.
Following the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, Mabalacat faced significant challenges brought about by volcanic ash and lahar. Despite these difficulties, the resilience and cooperation of its people enabled the municipality to recover and continue its development.
On July 21, 2012, Mabalacat officially became a component city of Pampanga through Republic Act No. 10164 after the successful ratification of its cityhood. Since then, Mabalacat City has experienced rapid urbanization, improved public services, expanded infrastructure, and continuous economic progress while preserving its rich cultural heritage and traditions.
